My plan is to take an adventure walk through the storied neighbourhood of Shaughnessy in Vancouver. Shaughnessy was the first large development of the Canadian Pacific Railway and was where their executives lived when they were relocated to Vancouver. The houses are stately manors, with amazing architecture and hints of past times that are revealed through architecture. I have mapped out an approximate route for my adventure, found below.

In order to detail my adventure, I will bring a cellphone to take photos and record sounds, and a notebook to jot down any interesting details. My story will be conveyed primarily through text. I will also have images and audio recordings of the adventure. I will visually document my route. I will also try to sketch unique and notable things that I see or meet. I will endeavour to work in the various principles of Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML), as discussed through this class.
Weather will play a large role in my adventure. When I did one run-through it was a sunny day and I heard the ice cream truck… on a very rainy day it was a very different experience and I even saw some wildlife scurrying away to get away from me. In any event, it is guaranteed to be an adventure! Hope you come along…..
Hi James!
I’m already looking forward to your multimedia story! The way you describe Shaughnessy as a neighbourhood full of stories and history; it makes the adventure feel immersive. I’m looking forward to seeing how your walk unfolds, especially with the mix of text, photo, and audio. Your idea of capturing how weather changes the experience is such a great touch.
One thing you could do to make it even stronger is to think about how you’ll guide the reader through your route. Maybe you could highlight a few key stops or moments you expect to be especially meaningful, or connect each part of the walk to one of the principles from Mayer’s CTML so the structure feels intentional. Even a simple map or a short intro about why you chose this neighbourhood could help anchor the story.
It truly sounds like a wonderful project, and I can’t wait to see where the adventure takes you!
